Features

  1. V/F Control and Sensorless Vector Control: Supports both V/F control and sensorless vector control modes. V/F control ensures stable operation for simple applications, while vector control handles complex loads, delivering high low-frequency torque and precise speed regulation without the need for an encoder, thereby meeting the requirements of various motors and equipment.
  2. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR): Features a built-in AVR function that maintains a constant output voltage despite fluctuations in the input power supply. This isolates the motor from grid instability, ensuring smoother operation and preventing speed fluctuations or equipment malfunctions caused by voltage instability.
  3. Automatic Energy-Saving Operation: Automatically optimizes the V/F curve based on the actual load. It reduces output during light-load conditions to minimize energy waste, resulting in significant long-term power savings—making it ideal for variable-load applications such as fans and pumps.
  4. Built-in PID Controller: Includes a built-in PID controller capable of processing signals from sensors (such as pressure, temperature, or flow) to establish a closed-loop control system. It automatically adjusts the output to maintain the setpoint, eliminating the need for an external controller, simplifying system architecture, and enhancing control precision.

Use Cases

  • Water Supply & HVAC: Constant-pressure water supply, pumps, fans, cooling towers, and HVAC circulation systems; PID closed-loop control ensures stable pressure and flow.
  • Industrial Processing: Air compressors, conveyor belts, mixers, food processing machinery, woodworking routers, and stone cutters; vector control ensures high torque at low speeds.
  • Agriculture & Outdoor: Agricultural irrigation, sprinkler systems, car washers, rolling shutters, and barrier gates; compatible with single-phase power supply and offers flexible installation.
  • Lifting & Transport: Small lifting equipment, hoists, and conveyor lines; ensures smooth startup and reduces inrush current.
  • Energy-Saving Retrofits: Variable-load equipment such as fans and pumps; automatic energy-saving operation for long-term electricity cost reduction.
  • Closed-Loop Control Applications: Motor speed control systems requiring PID closed-loop operation via pressure, temperature, or flow sensors.

FAQ

Q1: Does a VFD with single-phase 220V input output three-phase 220V or three-phase 380V?

The vast majority of VFDs with single-phase 220V input have a maximum output line voltage in the 220V range; they cannot generate 380V out of thin air. After rectification, the DC bus voltage for a single-phase 240V input is approximately 340V, and the line voltage after inversion typically falls within the 220–230V range. To drive a 380V three-phase motor, the motor windings must be reconfigured from a star (Y) connection to a delta (Δ) connection (assuming a dual-voltage 380V/220V motor) to allow for normal operation at 220V.

Q2: Does a VFD require derating when used with single-phase input?

Yes. With single-phase input, DC bus voltage ripple increases significantly (to approximately 48–65% peak-to-peak, compared to just 13–15% for three-phase input), and the input current is multiplied by a factor of approximately 1.732. Schneider’s official guidelines explicitly state that drives with single-phase input must be derated to handle the higher input bridge current and increased DC bus ripple. It is generally recommended to select a VFD based on 2.5 to 3 times the motor's full-load current.

Q3: Why can't my single-phase-to-three-phase VFD drive the load or reach the target frequency?

A common reason is that the VFD is undersized. In single-phase-to-three-phase applications, the VFD's current rating must be significantly higher. When the output current approaches the limit, the VFD triggers "frequency foldback" protection, lowering the output frequency to limit the current; this manifests as the frequency getting stuck at 45–50 Hz instead of the rated 50/60 Hz. Selecting a VFD based on 2.5 to 3 times the motor current can prevent this issue.
