Are micro inverters affected by high-voltage DC arc faults?

Micro inverters are generally less affected by high-voltage DC arc faults compared to traditional string inverters. This is due to their design and operating principles. Here's why:

  • Lower DC Voltage. Micro power inverters work by converting DC from a single solar panel to AC at the panel level. Each panel typically operates at a lower voltage, which reduces the risk of high-voltage DC arcs. High-voltage arc faults are more likely to occur in string inverter systems where multiple panels are wired in series, generating voltages that can exceed 600V or more. In contrast, the low DC voltage in microinverter systems is much less likely to create or sustain an arc.
  • Distributed Architecture. Micro grid inverter systems are decentralized, meaning that any issues with one panel or inverter are isolated from the rest of the system. In traditional string inverter systems, a fault in one part of the system can impact the entire string.
  • Built-in Protection. Many modern solar cell micro inverters come with advanced safety features, including arc-fault detection. While the lower DC voltage makes them inherently safer, this added protection further reduces the risk of damage due to arc faults.
