Tips: Three-Stage Charging Mode of MPPT Solar Controller

  • MPPT current limiting charging
    When the initial charging starts, when the battery terminal voltage of the system reaches a small value, the MPPT charging method is adopted, and the output power of the photovoltaic battery is drawn to the battery terminal. When the sunlight is strong, the output power of the photovoltaic cell is greatly increased, and when the charging current is quickly reached the threshold, the MPPT is stopped and transferred to the constant current charging mode. When the light intensity is weak and the constant current is difficult, it is transferred to the MPPT charging mode, so that it is freely switched until the battery terminal voltage rises to reach the saturation voltage Ur, and the battery enters the constant voltage charging phase. Through the mutual cooperation and automatic switching of the MPPT charging mode and the constant current charging mode, the solar energy can be fully utilized to quickly charge the battery.
  • Constant voltage current limiting charging
    At this stage, the charging voltage value is always Ur, and the charging current gradually decreases as the electrochemical reaction inside the battery progresses. When the charging current drops to about 0.01 C, the constant voltage charging is terminated and the floating charging phase is entered. Current limiting treatment is also performed during the constant voltage phase to protect the battery.
  • Floating charge
    The battery is floated with a voltage Uf slightly smaller than the constant voltage. This stage is mainly used to supplement the energy consumed by the battery self-discharge, which indicates the end of the charging process.
